A Tale of a Flamingo That Escaped: The Legend of Pink Floyd

Updated: Apr 7, 2024

Why Flamingo Floyd Travel, well let me tell you a tale of a flamingo that escaped and lived his best life on the Great Salt Lake (true story). He is the inspiration for this little travel company I am starting. I know you are probably scratching your head, a flamingo on the Great Salt Lake? Flamingos don't live in the wild in Utah.

Pink Floyd made his great escape from Tracy Aviary in 1988. Pink Floyd, a Chilian Flamingo, was a smart bird and on wing clipping day he hid. Not long after, he made is great escape to the Great Salt Lake. Now if you don't know much about flamingos, their favorite habitats are large alkaline or saline lakes that lack vegetation and fish that they would otherwise have to compete with. Sound familiar? The Great Salt Lake was the perfect habitat for Pink Floyd. If you are not familiar with the Great Salt Lake, it is an inland salt water lake that is saltier than the oceans. The Great Salt Lake does not have any fish in it, it is far too salty, and it is full of brine shrimp. The perfect food source for a flamingo.

Pink Floyd would spend his winters on the Great Salt Lake and would summer else where. It is not known where Pink Floyd spent his summers, but there were reports of a flamingo being spotted on the lakes in Idaho and Montana during the summer. Wildlife management and the aviary bird keepers tried to capture Pink Floyd, but he was too smart and not willing to give up the freedom he gained. Pink Floyd was last spotted on the Great Salt Lake in 2005.

Like Pink Floyd, I hope that you can live your best life traveling and experiencing the world.
